My Bass Resource: History of Bass Fishing

Bass fishing is actually a very old sport. It was originally done as a necessity to get food for people. In fact, many of the techniques involved in catching fish have been around for centuries. The first records of people catching and eating Bass can be traced back to ancient Rome. Here freshwater fish such as Bass and Carp were caught and eaten by citizens.

However, most modern Bass fishing was actually started in the United States. It can be argued that the first ever people to catch bass were probably Native Americans. They used to fish with nets and spears rather than modern rods we see today.

Those first anglers also used a large variety of points, hooks and other methods to help them land their own meals. The first fishing rods and reels weren’t introduced until the early 1800’s, but they were far too primitive to catch large, fast-moving fish like a Bass.

However, those first rods were still better than nothing, and they did give people an advantage over other methods of fishing.

Commercial Fishing

When commercial boat manufacturers started using motors to power their boats in the 1920’s, Bass fishing became even more popular. Before these motors were introduced, boats had to be rowed out into the water while carrying your equipment.

This was rather inconvenient and not all that fun! So when engines became available, bass fishermen could go further out onto bodies of water since they would have the power needed for traveling at faster speeds.

Today, there are many different tournaments and competitions that bass fishermen can enter. Among the most notable are the Bassmaster Classic, BFL and FLW Tour.

These are some of the top professional bass fishing tournaments, and they all have thousands of dollars in prize money available to their winners. They also have thousands of dollars in sponsorship deals. If you’re a Bass fisherman who dreams of getting paid to fish or even winning a tournament, you should consider entering these competitions!

Where is the Best Place to Find Bass?

Often, the best place to catch bass is in a lake. However they are also to be found in rivers and streams that have good depth, and good foliage cover. There are several different varieties of bass that live in the freshwater lakes that are found all over the United States. The majority of those lakes have a large amount of aquatic life, which means they’re not only home to Bass, but also other fish such as Bluegill, Crappie, Catfish, Trout and Pike.

Oxygen is a key component in finding bass. The basic rule is that the cooler the water, the more oxygen content. If you are fishing in the spring, summer or early fall, you will find that the larger bass will drop down lower in the water. This is  to find the cooler and more oxygenated water. Bass will also swim to find areas that are more concentrated with vegetation in order to find a better oxygen source. Trees, stumps, wind-blown banks, and power plants are all good sources of oxygen that will attract the bass.

A bass relies on cover as a means of self protection,  and also as a way of ambushing its prey. The bass is known as a lazy fish. They hide and wait for their prey to come to them. One other reason for the cover is that bass fish do not have eyelids. The cover is a way to prevent blindness.

Some common cover areas to find bass in are around fabricated wood structures such as fencerows, docks, and pilings. Weeds are also a favorite place for them to hide. Finally, rocks are the third place that bass will find cover.

My Bass Resource: How many varieties of Bass are there?

There are actually generally three common types of bass that are most popular with fishermen. There are also many sub-species of Bass, too many to mention here. Of the 3 common types the first is the Largemouth Bass, which is most common in lakes and ponds.

Then there’s a black variation of this fish known as the Smallmouth bass that can be found in rivers and creeks. This species only reaches about 18 inches in length.

There’s also a third kind of bass known as the Striped Bass. This fish can be mainly found in saltwater, but there are also some freshwater forms out there as well.

All three of these are unique fish and differ slightly in their physical appearance, as well as where they live and what they like to eat. For example, while the Largemouth Bass can grow up to three feet long, the Smallmouth is much smaller in size, growing to a maximum of 18 inches long. The striped bass can grow over 6 feet long and it’s also the largest of all Bass Species. It’s also the most aggressive and can be hard to reel in due to its strength!

How popular is Bass fishing?

The sport of bass fishing is extremely popular, as it’s easy for anyone to do. It doesn’t require too much equipment and is also very inexpensive to get into.

Recent figures estimate that 36 million people in the USA over the age of 16 regularly fish. Most go after Bass in some form, and they spent 43 billion dollars doing it.

Many people enjoy the challenge of being able to cast a lure into a body of water and then catching a fish with just their own strength and skill. It’s also one of the more affordable outdoor sports, since there are many different types of lures that you can use when you go bass fishing.

What’s the cost of a set up to fish for Bass?

Bass fishing is one of the more affordable sports you can get into. All you really need is a fishing rod, a line and a lure. It should be all in with just a few hundred dollars, but many start with second hand gear costing much less.

If you want to go all out with your equipment, you could also get yourself a nice bass boat. But since Bass are found in lakes, rivers and ponds, there’s no need to purchase something too big!

If you find that Bass fishing is something that you really enjoy doing regularly, you can always invest in more expensive equipment as well.

What do Bass eat?

Bass are Carnivores. The favorite meal for bass is Crawfish. They also eat Shad and are sometimes introduced to areas to help clear out the Shad. However, a bass will typically eat anything from rats, mice, ducklings, frogs, snakes, salamanders, worms, lizards, grubs, baitfish, insects, and leeches.

Where do Bass spawn?

Most Bass don’t officially mate until they grow to about 3 inches long, but some fish have been found to have found the mature size at just a little over an inch long. That said, once a female Bass reaches this point, she’ll begin to spawn by releasing eggs and sperm into the water near her spawning location.

The eggs will be fertilized by the sperm after they’re released into the water, and then they’ll eventually hatch after sitting in there for anywhere between 10 days and two whole months!

Bass for Food

Do people eat Bass? Yes they do. Fish are considered an excellent source of protein. Most fish, whether it’s a Bass, or any other kind of fish for that matter, are usually good for eating. Fried, poached, broiled, grilled are all acceptable methods of cooking Bass.

Are Bass Farmed?

Yes they are, because,as above, they are a good source of human food. However, care must be taken by the farmers. If the farm is in an area where if Bass gets out they could ruin natural local fish inhabitants.

My Bass Resource: Conclusion

Bass fishing is a sport that can appeal to just about anyone who enjoys the thrill of reeling in a fish. They are great fighters and will give any angler a run for their money. Whether you enjoy the challenge of catching them or not, there’s no denying that bass is an excellent source of protein. They are good for people to eat, or as bait for other kinds of fish.
